1955+ Sedan Weatherstripping Installation Instructions

TOOLS NEEDED:

  1. Narrow flat bladed screwdriver 1/8 wide for scraping old weatherstripping from any channels.
  2. Cements: we recommend 3M #08008 black weatherstripping adhesive.
  3. Pliers for removing old clips.

COMPARE
Before removing old weatherstripping from car door, familiarize yourself with it and compare old to new for approximate size and how it was installed. Separate left from right and start with the driver's door and remove old seal from this door only. This will leave other side for reference if needed.

PREPARATION
Remove old seal from driver's door completely and scrape out any glue or old weatherstripping stuck in door groove on top and under sides (C) and remove old clips by pulling with pliers, wiggle until free.

CLEAN
Clean all dirt and grease from where the new seal will be attached and later glued. (Note: do not glue as you go. glue only after new seal is completely installed - see last step!)

MATCH
Match corner angles on new seal with corner angles on door (D) and make sure new seal curves towards car body (see figure 2) if not, you have the driver's and passenger's seals mixed up (compare again).

START INSTALLATION (DO NOT USE GLUE YET!)
Push in first clip on first hole on lock knob side of door. See (A) then push in first clip on hinge side (B). This will help align the top part of the seal. Proceed to work on top of seal with flange instead of clips and holes. Angle lock in flange (F) of figure 2) into groove on top half of door and squeeze and wiggle until it is fully locked in place on all grooved areas - usually at top and sides on GM cars.

CLIPS
Finish bottom half of door, clicking clips in firmly, starting with second clip and on to the next until finished. (Make sure clips are tight in each hole).

TEST SHUT
After weatherstripping is fully installed without glue you may test shut your door. Note: door will shut harder at first but weatherstripping will degas for a custom fit (airtight) in a few days. This is normal. Metro SUPERsoft seals are the softest replacement seals available. They are up to 50% softer than other brands and are more durable than OEM.

GLUING
After your seal is installed and tested you may now glue the critical areas sparingly.

  1. Small amounts between clips see (H) figure 1. Gently lift or pull rubber away from body and apply a dot of adhesive between all clips.
  2. Upper hinge area (G) figure 1. This area usually has no grooves or clips so the adhesive is the only thing holding it in.
  3. Grooved areas 1" to 6" at top of groove and put a small amount in groove and reinstall back in groove. Only a thin bead of adhesive is needed to prevent new weatherstripping from coming out of groove.
  4. Leave door open 1 hour for uniform fit. Repeat for passenger side and any rear door if available.
